Positives: The teachers are good, classes are mostly entertaining
Negatives: Some of the assessment tasks are dreadful and complete waste of time
My advice to future students is: Actually do the readings
They help with work
Positives: Music tuition on instrument provided ensemble playing provided
Negatives: Subjective marking of performance by some staff.
My advice to future students is: Be confident and don’t take things personally
Positives: Practicals, getting to actually go out to schools and teach
Negatives: Rigidity and administration.
My advice to future students is: Pass everything. Failing any subjects makes it really difficult
Positives: There are several positive aspects to my course. Firstly, the vast majority of the tutors/lecturers are extremely knowledgable and provide excellent guidance throughout the course. The information provided is also incredibly up-to-date and has proven very useful when in the classroom. Assessments are, for the most part, fair and relevant to real-life teaching situations.
Negatives: One negative aspect is that the degree is a year longer than at every other university (5 years instead of 4). In saying that though, you are able to complete an integrated honours/TESOL in the 5th year, which may be attractive to some. In addition to this, the faculty is not very considerate toward student circumstances. There is a 90% attendance rate that must be adhered to irrespective of illness/misadventure etc. under threat of failure. Simple extensions have also been abolished.
My advice to future students is: I would advise them to think very carefully about whether the 5th year would be beneficial to them. I would also advise them to not just attend Sydney Uni because it's Sydney Uni.
I found the course hard - so be prepared, this isn't a walk in the park.
Overall, the course was good fun and easy and I'd recommend it to others.
My advice to future students is: Just do your best and study hard
I find the support the Uni provided was excellent and made the whole experience amazing.
