Positives: It provides a well rounded overview of all aspects of the equine industry and allows students to gain work in any area of the industry they like
Negatives: Some courses are repetitive or are not relevant to the degree
My advice to future students is: Be selective about your elective units. While the recommended electives are there for a reason, some recommended electives are thoroughly useless and are a waste of your valuable time and money
Positives: There was a really broad range of subjects available! The lecturers were at the top of their fields and I had some who were excellent! The facilities available are also top notch
Negatives: Very broad course meant that you could avoid subjects that you didn't like which for me were the subjects that would have made me more employable (GIS, statistics). The industry placement was good in theory but I don't think it really helped me in any way
My advice to future students is: Examine whether this course is right for you or if you are better off doing something more science based (eg ecology, environmental science) depending on the career you want
Positives: Hands on experience
Negatives: Extremely content heavy and measures memory rather than intelligence
My advice to future students is: All courses are hard and have many negative aspects and are generally unenjoyable so it is best to base your choice of course on the end result and not the course itself
Positives: Talks about real world problems and really challenges you but allowing you to come up with ideas of your own on how to come up with sustainable solutions. The course has a good range of compulsory courses that allow you to find something you’re interested in.
Negatives: Sometimes the assessment is a bit abstract which isn’t necessarily fair for grading as some people can have wildly different opinions. Also the range of electives especially for first and second year is not very wide or flexible
My advice to future students is: Come into the course with an open mind and really take time to understand the basic concepts first because you will use them more and more as time goes on. Pick electives that you think sound interesting rather than the easy sounding ones because there are some really really boring ones...
Positives: I mean I’m sure it’ll get interesting soon...
Negatives: That I’m doing a maths course, why we need that I don’t know. Also, it’s got nothing to do with horses whatsoever as of yet but I’m sure it’ll happen eventually
My advice to future students is: Don’t expect much from equine science because it’s clearly not about horses in first year
Positives: •Get to work with different species
•Make lots of friends
•Very versatile subject with great job opportunities
Negatives: Learning stuff not really needed ie learning about plant science for an animal subject
My advice to future students is: Have fun, stick it out. It's worth it. Stay on campus if you can!!
