I found Uni.. My experience with UON was positive. I felt I studied a broad range of subjects and was suitably equiped by the university to do well in these. The ICT facilities supported a work/study life (open 24/7) and I was offered a within weeks of graduating.

Positives: The course had some excellent practical courses that provided real life scenarios for teaching. Eg - going to gymnastics centres to learn how to best teach a gym lesson, and doing sporting subjects in a practical way. The Uni has a range of sports facilities that are available to both the public and students which we were able to utilise for lessons (swimming pool, gym, courts, ovals, nets etc).

Negatives: There were lecturers and tutors who clearly should have retired a long time ago. This made motivation in some subjects hard. I don't think age is any issue for teaching PDHPE degree's however some staff reflected a lower level of industry understanding and support for students that typically tended to be in the older age bracket.

My advice to future students is: This course does everything it needs to do - gets you qualified and mostly equips you well to do the job. There may be some frustrations with uni staff, but overall there are solid facilities and opportunities for further study (research honours etc). Having graduated I have never heard negatives about graduates from this particular university so is a good choice for someone wanted to be a High School PDHPE teacher.

Positives: It gives you a very broad qualification at the end being able to work in early childhood centres, primary schools and high schools up to year 10. The placement time is also very extensive so hands on experience isn’t lacking

Negatives: Some subjects that are compulsory aren’t what I was expecting as they’re not education based, but more about the content you’ll teach in schools

My advice to future students is: Work hard, start assignments when you get them and finish them with plenty of time to proof read and edit. And allow yourself time to breathe taking breaks and doing things for yourself, don’t drown yourself in study

Positive - the teachers were all extremely helpful. Online portal is set up and used daily by teachers and students - this made keeping up to date on work away from class very easy! You are provided with a wide range of rich resources and assistance to complete your work.

Negatives - Although this course was mainly filled with positives, some negatives would be some of the older teachers were more influenced by old teaching practices and were not very helpful if you had issues getting to class.

My advice to future students is: Definitely do this course. Get in close with the main teachers of the course and keep in contact with them to ensure you are doing the best quality you can. If you can get work at the same time it will be very beneficial to your studies.
