Positives: This course Masters of Professional Accounting with CPA Extension is a very unique course and rare one to find in Melbourne. Not much of the other Uni’s have this. After completing this course you will be done with the CPA program exams and just have to get the experience left in any accounting firm. Also we will get help from our lectures for the CPA subjects.

Negatives: As of now there is nothing negative, but yes few things that I faced in Sem 1 are the teachers. Few of the teachers are new and have less experience and was not up to the level I expected

My advice to future students is: The only advice is, that it is ranked one of the toughest courses. I have seen my friends struggling. So study hard and its more or less self study. Be prepared

Positives: The course has a number of positive aspects. The first thing is that there are a number of lectures with real world experience teaching the course. Furthermore we were lucky enough to have an actual hedge fund manager lecture for one entire unit. The location of the campus is amazing, close to public transport and amazing food places for those long days of studying.

Negatives: I think the main negative of the course is the assessment structures. I think there is to much emphasis on the end of year exam and not enough testing through the course which is great for learning. Overall I found the lectures amazing, however some of the tutorial were run by less experienced and knowledgeable people which can be frustrating if you have industry knowledge.

My advice to future students is: I think the most important thing to consider is if this is a suitable course for you then make sure that you apply yourself 110%. If you are doing this course because you don't know what you want to do post uni then you may struggle to find satisfaction from studying Master of Finance. The other thing you should do is use the uni resources which includes contacting lecturers out of hours to get more out of studying.

Positives: 1year of paid work placement organised by the uni. Gave me the skills and experience to get a job. Opportunity to do placement over seas too but I couldn’t afford to do it.

Negatives: What the lecturers promise you will do and what the real world does are very different. Academics promise you will have an $80k job working 9-5 and be well respected and do a lot of work by hand. Truth is work is bad hours, only pays about $25 an hour. Takes many years to get to the pay/hours they tell you. Job is constantly threatened by automation. Job market is super competitive.

My advice to future students is: Be good at it and be passionate about it. Do the job because you want to help diagnose people and their illnesses. Don’t do it because you think it’s a cushy job. It’s not. Very competitive too, you need to have good grades AND good communication skills for this job. Without communication skills, you are nothing.

Positives: Wide range of subjects and topics to choose from

Explore any area you enjoy

Can meet people with either same or different interests in communications / media

Be friend people from different countries

My advice to future students is: Choose something you enjoy so you are more motivated to study and put extra time and effort into it

Make lots of friends and connections because anything in this field will need your social and networking skills!

But not only that, making friends you learn lots about them, where they come from, their experiences and create life long friendships (even if you are not close)
