Positives: The history subjects are really interesting and informative. You are also provided with a lot of practical opportunities throughout the 4 years
Negatives: A number of ""filler"" units which were less than useless. Typically being placed with primary and early childhood educators as well, so behaviour management and pedagogy isn't always relevant. Not much scaffolding for students in regards to what to expect on prac and how to compile a portfolio.
My advice to future students is: Make friends with people in your cohort and assist each other throughout the process
Positives: Great for teacher registration in different state. Great practical experience.
Negatives: No support from tutors or faculty members
My advice to future students is: Make sure it is something you really want to do
Positives: I really enjoy the subject areas and the fact that they are super interesting, as well as the fact that I have the opportunity to connect with other people that are focused on helping others by teaching
Negatives: just minor things, for example one of my professors isn't great - doesnt go into enough detail .
My advice to future students is: carefully consider what you want to major and minor in, because if you aren't interested in these areas, it will make your experience really s****y
Positives: We had some great professors who were amazing in their field of work
Negatives: Firstly, QUT was super inflexible and we were told our course was being discontinued a year and a half into the degree. This information should have been shared prior as we were then grouped into lectures in our third year with first years! We weren't learning anything new. The university was super insensitive to this and the issues it raised as they are still getting their money. One of us was told to get another degree if we had a problem. It was super unprofessional.
My advice to future students is: To do your research on legislation that may effect current standing degrees so as to avoid being caught in the crossfire
Positives: It’s fun, I’ve met lots of new friends and the course structure is great
Negatives: There aren’t really any negatives as of yet
My advice to future students is: Put in as much effort as possible in year 1. It’s easier to get all 7’s in first year and glide downwards than it is struggle uphill in the third and fourth years
Positives: Hands on Learning, tutorials are very specific, practical for a career outside of uni
Negatives: Some parts are general knowledge repeated from year 12
My advice to future students is: To stick with it the whole way through. It gets better and it’s so worth it
Positives: It was great to get real world experience and get out into the field I was studying & hoping to make a career out of.
Negatives: The tutors of first semester classes were all in it and actually wanted to teach the class, whereas by second semester, it was as though they didn’t care for it and were just ‘going through the motions’. This affected my eagerness to learn.
My advice to future students is: Attend all lectures and tutorials. Even though they say attendance isn’t counted for anything, the lectures and tutors will help you out more if they see you in every class
Positives: Some subjects are super interesting and most tutors are very helpful
Negatives: 2 out of 4 of my tutors are extremely unhelpful, they disregarded my request for help on multiple occasions. I asked for help with a math question for my assignment and my tutor laughed in my face and told me that he wasn’t going to help as the question was ‘too simple’
Half my subjects are extremely boring and lack any sort of engaging material
The subjects don’t feel as if they will help me to become a teacher. It’s all theory work rather that practicals and how to teach
My advice to future students is: Don’t expect any help from the people who run the MZB101 course, because they won’t help
Positives: The positive aspects of my course would be the quality of the teaching staff. Most are able to help with simple inquiries and able to get connections we need after graduation.
Negatives: The entry standards for all education courses need to increase. There are some students in my classes who are not passing any of their subjects and it's really annoying for others.
My advice to future students is: I would probably tell them to start assignments early and to sit next to people that look like they need friends. Making friends in class is the best way to catch up on notes.
Positives: Very good teachers and content is understandable and relevant
Negatives: Very content heavy
My advice to future students is: Study
