This course requires students to complete 2 x field placements (1000 hours total) these placement are carried out in 3rd and 4th year (last 2 years) I think there should be placements all through the course - 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year (like the teaching degree).
So theory can be applied to real life practice sooner, rather then having to basically work full time to complete the hours in shorter time period - this also allows for placement providers to offer employment and possible another placement which students can be paid for in different areas.
My advice to future students is: Find out if there are online components to study - it's much easier. Text books are very expensive, find out if resources can be used online to prevent forking out money for books you only use for one semester
Positives: Providing support to the needy
Negatives: Work load and vigorous trauma if you fail to practice self care
My advice to future students is: I would advise them to work hard and focus as social work needs more time for both theory and applying theory into practice. Nothing good will come on the silver plate non other than hard work and to put into practice to make it perfect.
Positives: the teachers are very engaged and the field is expanding quickly. i also like being able to learn so much about so many social issues that are present in the world.
Negatives: the course is very modern and only draws on a lot of the most modern literature. this isnt normally a problem, but with such socially modern topics, it can be jarring when im learning about social elements that arent even accepted in society yet
My advice to future students is: to do what you enjoy, i tried other courses before this one and they never worked out. now that im doing something i think ill actually be able to enjoy in the future its much easier to stay engaged
Positives: The first thing I loved and what made me choose this university over others also providing this course was the location and facilities. This university is not like any others I have seen. The views are amazing and a great way to study. The facilities are modern and there are always places to study.
Negatives: That if you want to receive the social work association accreditation you must do a on campus course. This isn’t offered online which for a full time worker and a mother of three is very hard
My advice to future students is: Not to waste your time on a course your not passionate about. It’s a waste of time and money. Flinders offer open days to help you choose what you could study
